China, A strong tropical storm is heading toward southern China and could become a typhoon by Sunday. The storm, named Wipha, has already caused problems in the Philippines and Taiwan.
In the Philippines, strong winds knocked over a large billboard, crushing a parked truck. In Taiwan, heavy rain and winds led to canceled flights and ferry services. Over 20 cm (8 inches) of rain fell in some areas.
The storm is moving toward China’s coast, near Hong Kong, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Hong Kong has warned of possible flooding and closed a major bridge to Macao. Flights in and out of Hong Kong may be delayed or canceled.
The storm will weaken as it moves toward Vietnam and Laos. In China’s Hainan province, some ports have stopped operations for safety.
