Darjeeling, West Bengal – Heavy and incessant rainfall that began on Saturday morning has caused massive devastation across the Darjeeling hill region, triggering numerous landslides and flash floods.

According to Darjeeling Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Richard Lepcha, the reported death toll from the floods and landslides has tragically reached 23 so far. However, officials fear the final number of casualties may climb higher as rescue and search operations continue in the affected areas.

The relentless rain has flattened homes, buried villages like Mirik Basti and Jasbirgaon under mud and debris, and completely snapped critical road links. The widespread destruction is considered one of the worst natural disasters to hit the region in a decade.
